January – India
If you can secure a visa, January is an excellent time to visit the enchanting subcontinent of India. The weather is generally pleasant, and tourism dips after the December holiday rush, which means lower prices. It’s ideal before the monsoon season hits or temperatures soar. Though the extreme north might be better later in the year, January is perfect for most of India. If all goes well, I’ll be there when this post goes live.
February – New Zealand
Escape the cold by heading south for a New Zealand summer. February offers manageable crowds and fantastic weather. Whether you’re on the North or South Island, make the most of the brief, beautiful summer. If you’ve never been, you’ll wonder why you waited so long to visit this breathtaking country.
March – Jordan
Post-Arab Spring, much of the Middle East remains in turmoil, but Jordan stands as a safe and historical gem often wrongly perceived as dangerous. Visit before the masses catch on to its appeal. March offers reasonable prices as winter thaws and the high season hasn’t kicked in yet. While April’s weather can be unpredictable, March generally offers manageable temperatures and beautiful greenery in the north.
April – Japan
There’s never a wrong time to visit Japan, but spring holds a special allure, particularly with the potential to see cherry blossoms (Sakura) in bloom. While exact timing can be tricky, throughout April you can spot these beautiful flowers somewhere in the country. For extensive travel, consider the Japan Rail Pass to save on train expenses.
May – Morocco
North Africa’s extreme summer heat and winter chill make spring the perfect time to visit Morocco. Despite its growing tourism numbers, you can still easily find accommodations and tours in May. While temperatures in the Sahara can be warm, they’re far from summer’s peak heat. Coastal spots like Essaouira offer pleasant breezes and stunning beaches.
June – Turkey
June is surprisingly quiet in Turkey, despite fantastic weather and open attractions. It might still be cool in some areas, but places like Cappadocia are not yet swarmed with tourists, and the summer heat hasn’t kicked in. With mild weather, reasonable prices, and fewer crowds, June is an ideal time to explore Turkey.
July – Norway
Norway is never a cheap destination, but July manages to offer peak experiences without peak prices. Despite the heavy tourism, hotel rates are manageable as summer is not the busiest season for business travelers. Norway’s stunning landscapes, including its majestic fjords and rugged mountains, make it worth every penny.
August – Estonia
Stay north and explore the less-traveled Baltics. Estonia, though more discovered now, still offers reasonable prices and charm despite the influx of European tourists, especially those on “stag and hen” parties. Enjoy the long days, rich history, and vibrant arts scene. Tallinn, with its beautiful medieval walls, is a must-see.
September – Croatia
Croatia is a rising star on the Aegean coast, but summer brings high prices and large crowds. In September, the temperatures remain warm, but tourists have thinned out, making it a great time to visit. The coast and interior hold countless gems, and spots like Plitvice and Krka’s waterfalls are breathtaking.
October – Czech Republic
As temperatures cool and tourist numbers drop, October is a perfect time to visit the Czech Republic. Vibrant autumn colors transform the mountains, and you may find moments of tranquility in the capital’s charming streets. While not as cheap as a decade ago, the Czech Republic remains more affordable than many Western European countries. Explore Bohemia’s picturesque towns where the crisp air enhances the experience.
November – Australia
Springtime in Australia is simply delightful. While it’s a year-round destination, spring is ideal for enjoying the country’s national parks and scenic drives like the Great Ocean Road. The north experiences distinct wet and dry seasons, so plan accordingly. Remember, distances can be vast between destinations.
December – Thailand
Thailand’s weather is more temperate in December compared to the blazing summer months. Despite ongoing political instability, with some caution, you can still enjoy the Land of Smiles. December offers comfortable temperatures, making it an excellent time to explore this vibrant destination.
